Forest School

Leigh LollipopNursery runs high quality Forest School inspired sessions for those children attending the Nursery on a Wednesday and Thursday afternoon from 1.00 p.m. to 4.00 p.m. under the direction and supervision of a member of staff currently undertaking her Level 3 Forest School Leader training.

What is Forest School?

Forest Schools originated in Scandinavia where the concept is now well established as way of learning.  Forest Schools move the “classroom” into the outdoor environment, and there are many widely recognised advantages of this approach to early years education.

We have always placed high value on outdoor learning and have extended this approach by introducing Forest School inspired sessions for our children on certain afternoons of the week.

The Forest School approach to learning is exciting and inspirational in which children participate in a series of sessions in the natural environment. Children are offered rich opportunities to promote their well being and confidence in the outdoor environment and are given the freedom to develop their own ideas, make decisions, solve problems and take risks.

What are the benefits of Forest School?

  • Children are given the opportunity to experience the elements and enjoy “real” experiences;

  • Offers opportunities to learn that caters for different learning styles - learning is more informal and stimulates thinking forming the basis of lifelong learning;

  • Space and freedom to move around and develop physical skills - active learning;

  • Develops risk taking and more importantly develops the understanding of risk in a managed way;

  • More time to explore and investigate and develop own ideas;

  • Open - ended with no pre-requisite end result - develops self-esteem and sense of pride in own achievements;

  • Provides opportunities for real creativity and imaginative play;

  • Physically challenging with associated health benefits;

  • Is fun!

What happens at Forest School

Children spend the whole afternoon session (1.00 p.m. - 4.00 p.m.) in the “forest”.

Sessions take place in the garden and the private wood opposite the Nursery in Leigh.

All equipment necessary for the session is taken with us.

The exact detail of the session will depend on the children but they are likely to be involved in activities such as:

  • Storytelling

  • Mini beast hunts

  • Den making

  • Circle time

  • Collecting/sorting

  • Investigating

  • Recording

  • Mark making

  • Listening

What to wear

You may have heard the saying 'there is no such thing as bad weather, just bad clothing' and this has proven to be so true.

In order for the children to enjoy their time outdoors, they need to be prepared by wearing the right clothing and footwear.  Forest School inspired sessions will take place throughout the year except in high winds and storms.

If children are not suitably dressed, they may not be able to attend that week’s session.

In cold weather the children must wear layered thermal clothing, warm jackets, warm hats, extra thick socks and extra thick waterproof gloves.  It is very helpful if these can be attached to the child’s jacket with either elastic or clips, so they are less likely to get lost.

Footwear must be non-slip, waterproof, lightweight and warm.  There are some good snow boots out there.  NO sandals, Crocs or other open shoes please.

Wellies are not good in cold weather as they are not breathable, not warm and very slippery.  However, if wellies are all you have for now, please ensure your child has thick socks to wear with them as children with cold toes aren’t happy children!

Waterproof trousers and jackets are needed as a top layer.

In warm weather the children must wear a lightweight long sleeve top and a lightweight pair of trousers to avoid insect bites and scratches.

Sun hats and sun cream for the sunny days.  Insect repellent.

Lightweight, non-slip, waterproof walking boots are necessary.

A pair of wellies should be provided for the very wet days when walking in puddles and mud is more than likely!

Waterproof trousers and jackets are needed as a top layer.

Please provide at least one change of clothes for your child including socks and underwear, just in case they get wet.  Children yet to be, or still not fully, toilet trained, will need to have some suitably sized nappies, a named packet of wet wipes and nappy sacks.

Please ensure that all items of clothing are clearly named.

Food and Drink

The Forest Leader will organise a snack during the session.

A named water bottle filled with water only please.
